trails are happy

This morning, Rachel and I got up at a ridiculous hour. Ok, maybe 7 am really isn't that bad, but Saturdays, I appreciate my sleep. Regardless, we got up early and walked down to Center Street to watch the parade, only to find out that the parade was on Monday, on its appropriate and respective day - The Fourth of July.

So instead of sitting around wondering what to do, we decided to hike up to Squaw Peak. It was a lovely morning - the sun was shining cheerily, the birds were singing, and a certain tree is in bloom that makes the air heavy with this beautiful, sweet summer smell. It was glorious.

We didn't drive. I'm making it a goal to drive as little as possible this month (unless it is completely necessary). So we walked the two miles to Rock Canyon, hiked a mile and a half to the Squaw peak's trail head, then decided that we were far too tired and not physically up to hiking three more miles. We'll try it next week.

Instead, we found a lovely nook along the creek and ate lunch. It was beautiful. There were these giant boulders parked right in the stream, so we virtually ate in the creek. There was a nice lovely breeze off of the water, and it felt so good, especially since the sun was getting hotter the further we went along. As we were eating, I noticed a spider spinning it's web across the creek. I don't know what it is about them, but spiders fascinate me. Something about there eight legs make them morbidly attractive, and they really are beautiful creatures. Call me strange and unnatural, but if it makes me any more normal, I have a phobia of cockroaches.

When we got back, we were so exhausted we could hardly make a potato salad for dinner tonight. Our fingers were so swollen up like sausages because we were so hot, and it took several minutes of running our hands under cold water and then standing in front of the swamp cooler before they could function normally.

My bookshelf is put together. It looks so homey, now! I'm in such a reading mood, too.

Brandon and Hannah invited us over to watch fireworks with them. Now, I don't know why, but the Stadium of Fire decided it was just too good for Fourth of July and did it two days earlier, but I imagine it would have had the best show out of Provo, and so we went to watch. We had dinner of hot dogs, and then we parked ourselves in the grass and watched. Naomi was a little fussy, but it was way past her bedtime, so you could hardly blame her. The show was spectacular - I really enjoyed it.

Today was a really good day. Better, in fact, than I expected. But I'm just too tired to function my brain properly to think of a more entertaining way to tell about this day. I'm dropping misspelled words everywhere.

Also, I am sunburned. First sunburn of the season! Seven miles of hiking and four to five hours in the sun will do that to you. I feel like I stepped into a vat of aloe vera. Yuck.

Happy July 2nd!
